Co-Occurring Disorders Counseling in Riverside and Lake Elsinore

You Were Never Fighting Just One Thing

For a lot of people, the substance was only ever the visible half. Underneath it sits depression that predates the drinking, anxiety that never had an off switch, trauma nobody ever helped you process, or anger with nowhere to go. The using started as a way to quiet all of that, and for a while it did the job. That is not a coincidence. It is the reason it dug in so deep and held on so hard.

When two things feed each other like that, treating one and ignoring the other almost never holds, no matter how much willpower you bring to it. That is why the “just stop drinking first” advice has probably fallen apart on you before, and it is the specific problem our co-occurring work is built to solve.

Why The Order You Were Given Keeps Failing

Think about what happens when you treat only the substance. You get sober, and the depression or the trauma that you were drinking to escape is still sitting right there, now with nothing muffling it. That is a setup for going back, and most people do. Now flip it. Treat only the mental health piece and leave the substance alone, and the using keeps sabotaging every bit of progress you make, because you cannot heal while you are still numbing.

Treat More Than the Substance

Stopping substance use alone may leave underlying depression, trauma, or emotional challenges unaddressed.

Address Both Sides Together

Focusing only on mental health while substance use continues can make lasting progress more difficult. Both areas need attention as part of recovery.

One Plan, Whole-Person Support

Our counseling and recovery support address substance use alongside the emotional challenges connected to it, creating a more complete path toward lasting change.

How The Work Actually Goes, And Where Our LINE Is

We work with co-occurring needs through our outpatient and intensive outpatient counseling, grounded in the twelve-step model and paired with the anger and grief management that so much of this comes back to. You do this alongside people who understand what it is to carry more than one thing at once, which by itself takes some of the weight off.

We are also honest about our scope, because pretending otherwise would not serve you. We are a counseling and recovery organization, not a psychiatric clinic. If your situation calls for a clinical diagnosis, psychiatric care, or medication management, we will tell you plainly and help connect you to the right provider, then continue the counseling and recovery support that works right alongside that care. You get the whole picture addressed, with each part handled by the people equipped for it. Every plan includes aftercare, in English and Spanish, in person and online.
